Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures
Story
While scavenging the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists encounter the most fearful life form in the universe. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he established for Alien: Romulus: “If it can be practical, it will be practical,” so the actors were always faced with a physical representation of the xenomorph. Wherever possible, physical sets, realistic creatures, and miniatures were used to inform later visual effects work. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, their blood floats in the air in long, smear-like patterns.

Seeing Romulus was a disappointment
I’ve seen and enjoyed all the films many times, and appreciated the less popular ones in the series. Its grim imagery, particularly the opening sequence, left me confused at times. The relevance of the opener became clear later. And the dialogue was muffled in places, and I missed parts trying to figure out what was being said, thus missing the sequel.

The story was uninspiring, and the Xenomorphs were (mostly) identical to previous incarnations, and close-ups of the mouthparts no longer induce fear or terror, just boredom. This is one installment from the franchise that I may not watch again. The final season of What We Do in the Shadows is one of this month’s biggest TV and streaming premieres.
