A Montana ranching family faces off against others trespassing on their land… Forry J. John Dutton (Kevin Costner) often seems to “forget” his Montana accent and revert to the SoCal voice he usually uses.

(Review covers first two seasons only) I went into this show not expecting to like it, but the plot, acting, and cinematography are great. It’s basically Montana gang wars with the occasional huge dose of testosterone (cowboys with guns on horses while fishing)!

The show falters at the beginning of the second season, but picks up again in the middle

The show is at its best when it shows the Duttons moving on the chessboard and their enemies on it. Kelsey Asbill is the weakest link as Monica and plays the bad hand poorly, the plot is thrown together awkwardly and the acting is just plain bad. I think Cole Hauser as Rip might be the strongest acting (apart from Costner himself) and I was looking forward to every scene Rip was in.

Thomas Rainwater is also great

The plot is buzzing and the scenery is beautiful. Just as Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses was a little more raw and brutal than the title suggests, this show is similar. I highly recommend it and wish I hadn’t waited so long to see it.
