Cardinal Benitez delivers his climactic speech in Spanish
Story
When Cardinal Lawrence is tasked with presiding over one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events, the election of a new pope, he finds himself at the center of a conspiracy that could shake the very foundations of the Catholic Church. This is Carlos Diez’s first major film appearance, having previously only appeared in in two short student films. He was an architect by profession until 2020, when his last child left home and he decided to pursue a new interest by taking online acting classes and going to auditions.. It’s a little hard to believe that all the other cardinals understand him easily.
This is a wrong assumption
All cardinals speak fluent Latin by default, and many speak Italian in other conversations in the film. All of these languages belong to the Romance language family, so it is not difficult to assume that most cardinals would have a basic understanding of Spanish. This is partly thanks to the good, good actors who starred in this movie
Directed by Edward Berger (ALL QUIET ON THE WESTERN FRONT), CONCLAVE moves briskly, unraveling the mystery – no "whodunnit" but "who will get it" – and it gets surprisingly tense. Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort in the HARRY POTTER films) hosts events as "Dean" a cardinal tasked with leading a diverse group of cardinals to a consensus selection of the next pope. He acts as much detective as helper as he struggles against his own sense of faith…and ambition…all the while uncovering the plans and machinations of some of the "humble servants" they compete for the top job. They are skillfully assisted by John Lithgow, Isabella Rosellini and many others (mostly unknown) who are fighting for "pole position" in the race to be the next pope.
Rating: A-8 stars (out of 10) and you can take it to the Bank(ofMarquis)
Of particular note is the GREAT Stanley Tucci for his support as one of the candidates whose platform looks like “I don’t want this” but who, underneath, really, really does. Don’t be surprised if both Fiennes and Tucci (as well as director Berger) mention at the time of the Oscar nominations (they’re that good). As mentioned above, this movie has twists and turns and it’s fun to ride those twists and turns, but to be honest, I felt like this movie passed “one twist” far” and should/could have ended 10 minutes before it did (minus the final twist). Now, some would say this final twist is the point of the movie, but…I’d be fine without that point .You judge…and join the other “adults” in the cinema.
