While scavenging in the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he established for Alien: Romulus was that “if it can be practical, it will be practical,” so that the cast would always act in front of a physical representation of the xenomorph. Director Fede Alvarez approached the special effects crew from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. Physical sets, practical creatures, and miniatures were used wherever possible to help ground the VFX work that followed. When Rain turns off the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood is left suspended in mid-air in long blobs. Real-life zero gravity causes liquids to form spheres, not spread out in long, flat pieces like in the movie. Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give them more space. The 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and becomes menacing, much like in Alien 3 (1992), leading into the opening scene of the film. The logo itself gets a static shock and turns green. Nothing special, a lot of the really positive reviews are overrated. The characters for the most part are completely flabby and lack any real character, aside from Andy. I honestly had no emotional connection to most of the characters and most of them were just annoying and dull. The film was tacky at times, seemed to take forever to get going, and relied too much on the tropes of the Alien franchise to add any color to the plot and script. The special effects were pretty good and the original xenomorph design was excellent, although the face huggers look worse in this movie than in Alien and Aliens for some reason. Don’t get too excited by the current hype surrounding Romulus, it’s not a terrible movie but it’s not a great movie either. As a huge fan of the originals, I was disappointed. Whether they’re exploring the stars, escaping dystopias, or making the world a better place, these women are what science fiction is about.
